Custom Ottomans are wonderful…
We make them for ourselves and for clients.
We make them for ourselves and for clients.
Today I am going to show you how we added a removable tray top to one of our pieces.
I had seen a square ottoman from Gresham House with a tray like this and thought it was a clever way of extending the use and look of the piece.
The Ottoman we decided to add to is one that we had made a few years back.
It has antique feet and casters salvaged from a drop leaf table.
The fabric is Ralph Lauren Ankara Paisley-Pepper, I had fallen in love with this fabric as soon as it came into my studio and was excited to put it on a piece to show clients.
This photo will show you the ottoman without the tray.
Here are the steps for making the tray.
Measure out your base:
We decided not to have it the whole width and depth of the ottoman so you could still see some of the beautiful fabric and have a little perch for resting your feet.
Since our ottoman was 35″x35″ we went with a base of 30″x30″ to allow for the sides to get added and have a finished size of 33″x33″
Kent had some wood he wanted to use for the side pieces but it needed plaining…
You can see the neat shaving curls that came off the wood… I had a few ideas for those so I stored them away. ( there was eye rolling involved on the part of my handsome husband while he waited for me to get the bags, he is such a patient man, sometimes!)
After plaining Kent cut the side pieces to length.
He then glued and nailed it.
After nailing he filled the holes.
Now it was ready for a light sanding, then primer and paint.
I like the serving and display options that this tray adds to the piece and because we sized it down it will fit underneath the legs of the ottoman when we aren’t using it. Another great place for books, I am always looking for places to display books!
I think this project turned out well, I hope you like it too!
We now offer e-design packages for distance clients and our shop carries a delightful selection of beautiful items to enhance your home.
