The Day we moved to BannockBurn 1878

October 22, 2014 by Cynthia Filed Under: Antiques & Art, BannockBurn, Decorating Ideas, Interior Design, Personal, Residential Design

It’s official…

We are home!

Kent and I woke up Friday morning feeling as if we were walking around in a dream…

The kind of dream where everything is moving slowly and you are highly attuned to sights and sounds around you.

We had decided to take the day to just feel it.

To embrace the experience of moving into BannockBurn together just as a couple.

We packed up that first load, put Emmitt in the car, drove over, turned the key in the lock…

and walked into that historic stone house for the first time as the new owners of her.

It was…

Wonderful…

It felt like we had come home.

The exterior of the house and the seven acres of grounds around it were what we fell in love with about BannockBurn.

Although Sabine has done extensive work on the property through the years the inside of the house still needs a bit of love to bring it to its full potential.

That challenge excites us and we can’t wait to get started!!

Would you like a little tour?

I thought you might!

We came in the kitchen door and saw a note on the island.

It was a perfect way to begin our lives there as it set the stage for all that is to come.

This is the text of the note left for us by Sabine…

We walked from room to room and took it all in.

My hands were shaking so forgive the photo quality please.

I was so nerved up I am impressed I had the sense to take any pics at all.

We were just like a couple of kids in a candy store running around and looking at everything.

Perhaps this may go down as the fastest DIY project ever but within minutes of owning the house Kent was opening up the doorway from the hallway into the dining room.

It had been walled off to create an office space for Sabine but we knew we wanted to use the room as a dining room again so… Why wait?

Our son Spencer was coming the next day to help us move so that gave us the luxury of just “being” in the house for the evening. We had a bed, a few boxes of household stuff, a side table, some clothes, toiletries, food…

AND…

A nice bottle of bubbly…

We were set!

O.K., I have a confession…

I waited as long as I could…

Truly, I tried to relax and enjoy the romantic moment…

Kent and I in an empty house toasting our future together …

But…

The bubbly wasn’t even finished and I was on a stepladder stripping wallpaper border off the kitchen.

I couldn’t help myself!

It really HAD to go!

Kent rolled his eyes but he had a huge smile on his face and I knew he was loving every minute watching me strip…

The wallpaper that is!  ( sorry, It was just to easy! ;))

The Kitchen has great potential.

It boasts 10ft. ceilings and two beautiful big windows which are currently hidden by a long pedestrian looking counter spanning the entire wall.

French doors lead out onto the porch and look out towards the barn making the views from the kitchen quite spectacular.

Yes, it is a fantastic footprint currently masquerading as a pepto pink 80’s throwback.

I can’t wait to get started with the renovation but for now…

I will have to be satisfied with getting rid of that wallpaper border!

I am writing this post from my new office/studio space in an upstairs bedroom.

It will be a wonderful place to work from when everything gets set up.

Today all I have is the computer sitting on a little round side table and an antique rocking chair covered in blankets to keep the morning chill off me while I type…

I feel a bit like a time traveller caught between eras.

Sitting in a stone house wrapped up in blankets… Working away at my computer!

it is a bit surreal.

And…

Perfectly Imperfect.
