I am often asked how I create appealing displays.
It seems to be something people struggle with…
Whether you have a bookshelf, tabletop or seasonal vignette to create,or even a whole room to design here is a tip I use.

Triangles are your friend…

Yes, that ‘s right, and yes, it is that simple…
Triangles are your friend… your best friend… the one you tell all your secrets to and eat ice cream from the container with…
Yup, that’s it.
Triangles are your friend when creating a balanced, attractive display.
The eye likes triangles, they are appealing.
You can use equilateral, scalene or isosceles… remember from grade five geometry?
If you want a formal display stick with equilateral or scalene, they give nice structure and balance.
If you want a more casual look then go with isosceles, displays with this form seem to be more fluid.
Look around at displays you find attractive, chances are you will find a triangle in the overall shape, there may even be several from different perspectives in the room.
Here are a few more examples of my theory at work…
In this vignette I wanted to centre the pussywillow starburst on the mirror and flow out from it onto the Birdseye maple dresser.

There are three triangles at work in this display…
The large one takes in the whole wall and the two table top triangles are more subtle.
They add a layering effect.
The baketable in this example was one of the pieces we bought on our recent auction adventure… if you missed that post you can catch up here… it was a wild nail bitting day and I still giggle with delight every time I walk by that huge mirror!
Enough giggling…
Back to Triangles.
My kitchen has triangles all over it…
I started drawing them on the photo to show you but had to stop at three to keep it from getting to confusing!
I change the displays on the open shelves often with my mood and the changing seasons…
I have a ton of fun with it!
